Mong Kok is the one-stop shop for everything
you need. It has every retail market, restaurant, entertainment, and shopping
centre imaginable. It was described as the busiest district in the world by
the Guinness World Records.
When you come to Mong Kok, be ready with your haggling skills to enjoy great
bargains.
1. Street
Entertainment
Head over to Mong Kok on weekends to experience Hong Kong’s local
entertainment in the stretch of Sai Cheong Yung Street of Mong Kok.
It is a three-floor shopping
arcade best for getting women’s stuffs if you want variety and options. This is
similar to the Divisoria Shopping Mall in Manila or the Platinum Fashion Mall
in Bangkok. Our little tip for you is to go directly to the third floor since
it is where you will find low-priced items and pre-loved luxury bags. Shops
here open after lunch around 1pm and the place gets crowded shortly afterwards.
3. Ladies Market
Located at Tung Choi Street, this street market is open
daily from mid-day until late-night with stalls and shops selling variety of
clothing and accessories.
This is where you will find souvenirs like Hong Kong shirts, keychains, and
ref magnets. But be sure not to pay the asking price. Haggling is the game
here. It will be normal to haggle at least 50% of their selling price. One
little tip is to look around first and check the prices of the other stores
before making any purchase. The street market vendors only accept cash as
payment.
4. Fa Yuen
Market
Additional bargain shopping in Mong Kok can be found in the shops and
street stalls of Fa Yuen Street. This one is not as touristy as the Ladies’
Market so it is a little more comfortable to look around if you care for your
personal space. They have a wide range of items which are even better than the
ones you see in most of the street markets in Hong Kong. Skip Ladies’ Market if
you you’re short on time and come here directly to enjoy better bargains and friendlier
shopping ambiance.
There are also retail stores like H&M, Forever 21, Giordano,
Bossini, and G2000 if you want more clothing options.
Mong Kok’s Fa Yuen Street is known as the Sneakers Street in Hong Kong.
Not to be confused with the Fa Yuen Street Market, the Sneakers Street is the
one near the Ladies’ Market in Mong Kok.
It is where Hong Kongers go for a large
selection of shoes, sportswear, and streetwear for it has over fifty (50)
stores that sell all things sporty.
6. Sim City
This is a one-stop location for new and used camera
gear in Hong Kong. There are also shops here selling camera and cellphone
accessories that you will not normally find in the gadgets stores nearby. The other
popular gadget stores in Mong Kok are Broadway and Fortress so you can
price-compare first before committing to buy anything from Sim City. Paying by
cash will always get you the best price.
If you’re a makeup artist or a makeup enthusiast, then this is the
perfect place for you. The Beauty Avenue in Langham Place is a two-floor
shopping centre for all things beauty. The other makeup stores that you will
find in every corner of Mong Kok are Sasa, Bonjour, and Colourmix. There’s Nyx
and Kiko Milano outlets too.
Knowing that HK is a shopping haven for ladies, this
hidden gem is a good place for some men shopping. You could find men’s
clothings, bags, sneakers and limited edition of men’s stuffs here.
It is the second "vertical mall" in Hong
Kong. Langham
Place has the longest escalator in a shopping mall. It has two (2)
Xpresscalators which allow shoppers to travel 76 meters in a convenient and
fast way. Stop by the newly opened Lego Store at the highest level where you
will see a locally designed Lego display of the major streets in Mong Kok.
The Mong Kok area has many food stalls selling
traditional snacks such as fish balls, fried beancurd,
egg waffles, and various finger
food. You will not surely miss Hong Kong’s street food for you will find food
booths in every corner of Mong Kok.
One
big tip for shopaholics, Mong Kok gets too crowded on weekends. So plan your
visit well to enjoy one great shopping experience.
